Reason for Visit
Mr./Ms. Kim OO, a working professional in their 40s, had been experiencing significant daily discomfort due to shoulder pain that started two years ago. Initially, they thought it was just muscle strain and endured it with patches and painkillers. However, as the night pain gradually worsened and it became difficult to even lift their arm above their shoulder, they visited our clinic.
"At first, I thought it was just because I overexerted myself, but when it got to the point where I couldn't sleep, I realized I needed to do something and came here."
Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
Initial examination results:
- Range of Motion (ROM): Shoulder elevation approximately 90 degrees (normal is 180 degrees)
- Night Pain Score: 7/10 (VAS)
- Tender Areas: Supraspinatus, subacromial bursa
Through a constitutional diagnosis, it was determined that the patient's constitution typically has weak Qi and blood circulation, and cold energy tends to easily accumulate in the shoulder area. We recommended a 6-week program combining herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion, and Chuna therapy.
Treatment Progress
Weeks 1-2
Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy were performed twice a week to relieve tension around the painful area. There was no significant change in the first week, but from the second week, night pain began to decrease from 7 to around 5.
Weeks 3-4
The range of motion recovered to 130 degrees. Chuna therapy was added along with the herbal medicine, and the patient reported that the burden of using their shoulder in daily life had decreased.
Weeks 5-6
Range of motion 170 degrees, night pain less than 1/10, almost back to normal daily life. After the completion of treatment, we recommended maintenance care at monthly intervals.
Patient Comments
"Taking the medicine, getting acupuncture, and receiving Chuna therapy, I felt myself gradually getting better in a mysterious way. Most of all, being able to sleep soundly is the biggest change."
"Before, it was even hard to carry my bag during sales meetings, but now I can move freely, which has given me confidence."
A Word from the Medical Staff
Chronic shoulder pain can easily recur if only the painful area is treated. Integrated treatment that considers the patient's constitution and lifestyle habits together is important. In Mr./Ms. Kim OO's case, a quick recovery was possible thanks to their consistent cooperation with the treatment.
